IBM has developed an artificially intelligent computer
system called Watson. Watson is a cognitive system that learns and develops
constantly. Watson also understands English, so when asked questions he can respond
directly. Using analytics the amount of questions Watson can answer is
unfathomable. He appeared as a contestant on Jeopardy! and blew away the
competition. Not only is Watson able to answer questions he can analyze certain
situations. In the medical field Watson can help assist health care
professionals when dealing with patients. Watson checks not only all the available
journal articles but also the patients’ history. This allows people in health
care to have a whole new grasp on the industry. Watson is a complex problem
solver here to help propel us into the future.
I remember Watson from the talk we had with Mr. Cooper at the Chamber of Commerce. It is incredible how already a computer has surpassed human analytic skills. This has been a growing fear of mine, since you see everyday how many technological products are substituing human talent, while the rest of the world keeps getting smaller from the increase in human population, and now with Watson what is going to happen? Till what end are we going to permit computers do our work for us? I remember that Mr. Cooper highlighted the human element will always be present, called me old fashion but when it comes to technological advances I am always at first skeptical about it.
